Festival of the West Indies
A celebration of West Indian art forms is one way to preserve West Indian culture and teach American spectators about West Indies ways of life. The long hours of preparation, the care taken in making the carnival costumes, the artistry in West Indian music and dance, creative distinctiveness of Caribbean food, and the commitment to excellence in the overall visual and auditory impressions that each costumed “band” tries to make all demonstrate the Caribbean values of achievement and cultural pride. Youngsters participating in the Carnival are given a opportunity to enhance a form of self-esteem rooted in creativity, hard work, and the celebration of inter-cultural differences. Differences are expressed through the carnival in that the folk arts of numerous different islands are on display.
